U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated on Tuesday that the outage affecting Saudi Arabia’s critical East-West crude oil pipeline is a temporary interruption expected to be resolved within days. Speaking with CNBC’s Morgan Brennan in Houston, Wright characterized the situation as brief and anticipated a quick return to operations.
The pipeline was shut down late last week after sustaining damage from a drone strike launched from Iraqi territory. Wright identified Iran-backed proxy groups as responsible for the attack. Saudi officials have long utilized the East-West corridor to transport crude exports away from the Persian Gulf and toward terminals on the Red Sea coast.
With the United States and Iran vying for control over the Strait of Hormuz, Riyadh had increasingly relied on the pipeline to diversify its shipping routes. According to Wright, Saudi authorities are currently redirecting some oil exports back through the Hormuz strait, supported by U.S. military assets, while repairs are underway.
Market reaction has already begun to reflect concerns over potential supply disruptions. U.S. crude oil prices have risen more than 5% this week, trading above $105 per barrel as investors assess the impact of the pipeline closure on global energy supplies.
