U.S. Confirms First-Ever Deployment of Weapons in Space

The United States has officially acknowledged for the first time that it possesses weapons deployed in orbit. During a speech at the Air and Space Cyber Conference on Monday, U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink stated that the nation has “on-orbit space control weapons” designed to shield American forces from hostile actions.

Meink did not disclose the specific types of weaponry involved or the timeline for their deployment. His remarks were part of a broader strategy to modernize both the Air Force and the Space Force, driven by rapid technological advancements among U.S. adversaries and the increasing integration of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems in warfare.

Highlighting an accelerating threat landscape, Meink argued that the U.S. must enhance its combat capabilities more efficiently. “We will dramatically increase our combat power by adding large numbers of highly autonomous systems,” he said, predicting that these initiatives would result in a “radically different-looking Air Force by 2032.” The comments reflect a global reassessment of defense needs, particularly in light of hybrid attacks and the drone warfare tactics observed during the conflict in Ukraine.

The announcement comes amid a booming commercial space sector, bolstered by SpaceX’s historic initial public offering earlier this year, which was noted as the largest IPO in history.
