Two Latvian Nationals Detained After Breach at UK-US NATO Intelligence Base

Authorities in the United Kingdom have arrested two Latvian men after they breached the perimeter of a military facility in Cambridgeshire that hosts critical US and NATO intelligence operations. The incident has intensified scrutiny regarding security protocols at British military sites.

Counterterrorism police confirmed on Thursday that the suspects, aged 36 and 32, were taken into custody during the early hours of the morning at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Molesworth base. Both men are Latvian nationals who reside in the UK.

The arrest followed a report of an abandoned vehicle discovered near the base late Wednesday night. Officers identified a small opening in the perimeter fencing and subsequently located the individuals inside the restricted area. They are currently being held at a Cambridgeshire police station on suspicion of trespass and entering a prohibited place for purposes prejudicial to UK interests.

This event occurs against a backdrop of heightened anxiety over military base security in the UK. On September 27, a major incident was declared at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire after three suspicious vehicles were spotted nearby. That situation led to the arrest of seven men, all in their 20s, one of whom holds dual UK-Iranian citizenship. Those individuals have since been released on bail.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, acknowledged the public concern surrounding recent events but stated there is no evidence linking the Molesworth breach to the earlier incident at RAF Fairford. She emphasized that investigations are in their preliminary stages and will focus on determining the motivation behind the men’s presence at the site.

RAF Molesworth, originally constructed during World War II, now operates as a non-flying facility managed by the United States Air Force. It serves as a central hub for US intelligence operations covering Europe and Africa and functions as a key NATO intelligence node. Meanwhile, RAF Fairford has been utilized by the US military for strike operations, including campaigns related to conflicts involving Iran.

  1. Really? Again? At this point, I’m starting to question if we’re taking base security seriously enough.

  2. Latvian nationals but UK residents? It makes you wonder about the vetting process for non-British citizens accessing these sensitive sites.

  3. This sounds incredibly alarming. How exactly did they get past the fencing? The details are worrying.
