England head coach Thomas Tuchel has issued a stark warning to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer following their recall to the national team, emphasizing that selection alone does not guarantee a place in the starting lineup. Both players were controversially omitted from the squad for the 2026 World Cup but have been called back for the upcoming Nations League campaign.
The four-match Nations League series kicks off with a high-profile clash against World Cup champions Spain at Wembley on September 26. The itinerary continues with away fixtures against the Czech Republic and Croatia in late September, before concluding with a home match against the Czechs on October 6.
Tuchel acknowledged that while Alexander-Arnold and Palmer had strong starts to their club seasons, their exclusion from the World Cup was a deliberate tactical choice rather than a reflection of their ability. The Chelsea forward has regained his creative spark with four goals and two assists in six games this season, while the Real Madrid right-back has featured in five matches, including an impressive midfield cameo against Inter Milan in the Champions League.
“They never did something wrong. We just chose different players,” Tuchel explained. “Now it is a new competition. Some players, some positions, have more injuries. Cole has his numbers back… so that is why he is in the squad.”
The manager stressed that the door is open for both players to re-establish themselves, but the onus is on them to justify the nomination.
