President Donald Trump announced plans to transform his proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., into a “military complex” featuring sniper positions and drone operations, citing national security requirements.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the conversion was undertaken at the request of the U.S. Military. “At the strong request of the United States Military, and for National Security purposes, I have agreed to convert the magnificent Triumphal Arch… into a top grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch,” he wrote.
Trump detailed that the structure, planned for the site between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, would be used to house, store, and deploy large numbers of drones and snipers across both the roof and plaza areas. He also noted that the facility would maintain storage for significant quantities of sniper ammunition.
The project has encountered substantial opposition and legal hurdles. More than 100,000 comments were submitted to the National Park Service regarding the proposal, which would stand twice the height of the Lincoln Memorial. Additionally, a lawsuit filed by Vietnam War veterans and an architectural historian alleges the arch would desecrate Arlington National Cemetery and that the president lacks the authority to build it without congressional approval.
Earlier this month, U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkin ordered the government to provide 48 hours’ notice before proceeding with any activities on Memorial Circle, warning that construction or demolition prior to final National Park Service authorization would violate the court’s order.
This judicial restraint followed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s announcement on X that the administration intended to break ground within two weeks, despite pending reviews from the National Capital Planning Commission. Trump defended the project on social media, claiming Washington, D.C., is the only one of the world’s top 59 capitals without a triumphal arch, asserting that his design will be “by far, the greatest of them all.”
