US President Donald Trump promised a $5,000 economic dividend for every American adult on Wednesday if the Republican Party maintains control of both chambers of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections. The announcement was made during a speech at the Republican National Midterm Convention in Dallas, Texas.
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate… I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said. He added a condition that the money must be spent within the United States, explicitly stating he did not want citizens spending the funds in countries such as Canada, China, or Germany.
The president did not outline how the initiative would be financed or how the government would monitor spending. This pledge follows a previous unfulfilled promise to distribute $2,000 checks from tariff revenues.
In his address, Trump defended several key aspects of his second term, including the ongoing war in Iran, trade wars involving tariffs, immigration crackdowns, restrictions on transgender rights, and the construction of a new White House ballroom. He urged voters to imagine his name on the ballot for the November elections.
The convention also featured discussions on renaming geographic landmarks. Trump received enthusiastic applause for his attempts to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario. He further suggested changing the name of the Strait of Hormuz to the “Trump Strait.”
