United States President Donald Trump hosted a high-profile state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday night, marking the conclusion of the Chinese leader’s first visit to Washington in over a decade. Earlier in the day, Trump described the preceding talks as a “great meeting,” noting that both nations are seeking increased dialogue even as they navigate significant differences regarding Iran, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, and trade. During his toast, Trump remarked that while the two countries represent different systems, the relationship between their peoples remains strong.
“Together, we can continue to build a relationship that promotes prosperity and security for future generations,” Trump said, according to reports from The Associated Press.
Xi Jinping reciprocated the positive tone in his own remarks, highlighting the alignment between Trump’s pledge to “make America great again” and China’s goal of achieving “great national rejuvenation.” He suggested that these two ambitious visions could be mutually reinforcing.

Before the evening’s festivities, the two leaders toured updates at the White House, including a newly constructed helipad and Marine One presidential helicopter. Trump also invited guests to view the site of a new ballroom currently under construction nearby, continuing his recent focus on renovating Washington’s infrastructure.
The summit represents the second meeting between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies this year. The visit was preceded by an unusual protocol gesture, with Trump personally greeting Xi and his wife upon their arrival at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, rather than waiting for them to reach the White House.
