Trump Highlights Progress on Permanent U.S. Base in Poland Amid Rising Security Concerns

President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that the United States has achieved “major progress” in plans to establish a permanent U.S. Army base in Poland. The announcement came via a Truth Social post, which was also shared by the White House on X, where Trump described the potential facility as a “historic step” for the bilateral alliance. He indicated that the specific location for the base would be revealed shortly.

The president’s comments arrive as Polish officials express growing alarm over the possibility of Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine spilling over into NATO territory. Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the parliament earlier in the day, warning of a “real risk” that Russian drones or projectiles could cross into eastern NATO member states and cause destruction.

Tusk cited unspecified intelligence suggesting that Moscow may attempt to disguise deliberate attacks as accidents to weaken NATO’s resolve for a coordinated response. He noted that Russia is deploying a new generation of jet-powered attack drones, which travel at higher speeds and altitudes than the propeller-driven models used throughout the conflict, making them significantly harder to intercept.

Tensions intensified over the weekend when a Russian drone struck a passenger train in Ukraine carrying foreign dignitaries, including former CIA Director David Petraeus and senior European officials. The attack forced evacuations just miles from the Polish border. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told CBS News that he believes the strike was intentional, part of a broader Russian strategy to intimidate foreign leaders.

In response to the heightened threat, Poland is bolstering its border defenses. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that engineering troops are reinforcing infrastructure along the Polish-Ukrainian frontier with Hesco bastions and new observation posts. These measures have been observed at crossings in Dorohusk, Medyka, and Korczowa, though officials clarified that the deployments are intended strictly for border security rather than signaling a general military mobilization.

While roughly 10,000 U.S. troops are currently stationed in Poland on a rotational basis, the prospect of a permanent base represents a significant escalation in NATO’s eastern flank fortifications. However, the Trump administration’s stance on troop deployments has caused uncertainty among allies. Earlier this year, the administration flipped on a planned deployment of 4,000 to 5,000 forces, leading Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard to describe the U.S. position on joint defense as “confusing.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently launched a broader review of U.S. forces across Europe, asserting that the era of NATO allies “freeriding” has ended. Although Kosiniak-Kamysz has named Poznań and Wrocław as potential sites for the new base, no final decision or location has been officially confirmed.
