Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is scheduled to meet privately with US President Donald Trump for a one-on-one dinner at the White House on Sunday evening. The event marks a significant diplomatic gesture following months of public friction between the artificial intelligence startup and the Trump administration.
Trump confirmed the meeting on social media, using the occasion to reiterate his administration’s commitment to accelerating AI development. He argued that imposing stricter regulations would cede technological leadership to China, a concern he emphasized while attending the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Illinois.
“We’re about maybe a year and a half up on China,” Trump told Fox News. “We’re leading, and we’re building tremendous, trillions of dollars’ worth of places. And why should we give that up?” While acknowledging Amodei’s worries regarding the safety risks of rapid AI expansion, the President maintained that maintaining a competitive edge over Beijing remains the priority.
The upcoming dinner follows a contentious period for Anthropic. Just two days prior, a federal appeals court upheld the Pentagon’s classification of the company as a “supply chain risk,” a designation that bars the US military from utilizing Anthropic’s AI models. The sanctions were imposed after Anthropic refused in February to permit its technology for fully autonomous weapons systems or domestic mass surveillance.
Tensions previously escalated when Trump criticized Amodei for advocating a pause in AI development, with the President accusing the CEO of attempting to appear like “a perfect little angel.” The rift was further highlighted when Amodei skipped the state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, an event attended by other AI industry figures including OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
Despite growing internal and external pressure to slow technological progress due to safety concerns, the US government continues to urge major sector players—including OpenAI, Google, and Meta—not to lag behind China. President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are set to convene with leading AI executives on Tuesday to discuss the path forward.
