Trump Approves Rollback of Biden-Era Fuel Economy Standards

President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he has approved new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, effectively overturning the stricter regulations implemented by the previous administration under Joe Biden. The policy shift marks a reversal of efforts designed to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in the United States.

Since their inception in 1975, CAFE standards have been regularly updated to improve vehicle efficiency. The Biden-era rules would have required automakers to raise the fuel efficiency of passenger cars and light trucks to approximately 50 miles per gallon by 2031. In contrast, the new standards represent a significant loosening of these requirements.

Trump framed the decision as a major benefit for both the automotive industry and consumers, although the specific details of the final standards have not yet been released publicly. Writing on Truth Social, he stated, “These new Standards will take the waste out of building cars in America. That means LOWER PRICES, saving families thousands on a new, beautiful, and safe car — Far better than the Environmental Monsters that we were building heretofore.”

The President noted that major manufacturers, including General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis, had expressed interest in expanding production in the U.S., asserting that the new rules enable this goal.

This regulatory change fulfills a key campaign promise by Trump to rescind policies that incentivized electric vehicle production. While the exact figures remain undisclosed, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy previously indicated that the new standards would be substantially lower than those established by his predecessor.

Weaker fuel economy mandates allow automakers to produce a greater volume of pickup trucks and SUVs, which generate higher profits than smaller vehicles despite having poorer gas mileage. Although electric vehicles may become less attractive to manufacturers under the new regime, some companies, including General Motors, have stated they will continue to produce them.
