Trump Announces Energy Ceasefire Between Russia and Ukraine; Zelenskyy Seeks Details

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” halting attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. However, it remains unclear whether either Moscow or Kyiv has formally consented to the proposed truce.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” The White House declined to provide further elaboration, directing inquiries to the president’s social media statement.

The announcement comes amid rising global energy costs driven by the ongoing U.S. conflict with Iran. A stabilization of energy supplies between the warring European nations could help ease oil and gas shortages ahead of the winter season.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded cautiously, stating that Ukraine supports the ceasefire concept but emphasized that Russia must also commit to it. “We are awaiting details from the American side,” Zelenskyy said, adding that Kyiv remains fully supportive of de-escalation efforts aimed at ending the war and guaranteeing lasting peace.

Tensions between the two leaders have fluctuated recently. Earlier in the week, Trump criticized Zelenskyy, suggesting he should be replaced and blaming him for high diesel prices that could impact Republican prospects in the upcoming midterm elections. Trump also claimed to have struck a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring Russian diesel into the market.

In response to those comments, Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine would only halt attacks on Russian oil refineries if Russia stopped targeting Kyiv’s electric grid. Ceasefires between Russia and Ukraine have historically proven fragile since the 2022 invasion, and despite Trump’s repeated attempts to broker a resolution, significant obstacles remain.

  1. Fragile at best. Past ceasefires always broke within weeks. I’m skeptical this one will last any longer.

  2. The timing feels suspiciously convenient given Trump’s recent comments about Russian diesel and midterms.

  3. Zelenskyy asking for details is smart. You cannot trust a ceasefire without written terms and verification.
