Trump Announces $200 Billion South Korean Investment as Alaska LNG Stalls

President Donald Trump described a newly announced partnership with South Korea as one of the most significant energy infrastructure investments in U.S. history, revealing that Seoul plans to inject up to $200 billion into American energy projects. The deal, unveiled at the White House on Wednesday, encompasses nuclear power development and natural gas facilities, although the status of the long-controversial Alaska LNG project remains unclear.

While Trump took to Truth Social to assert that both nations had agreed to collaborate on the Alaska liquefied natural gas venture, valuing it at $50 billion, South Korean officials have not formally committed to the endeavor. According to Yonhap News, the South Korean government is currently reviewing whether the project meets commercial reasonableness standards and satisfies domestic legal requirements. Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan previously characterized the Alaska initiative as high-risk, noting that participation would be difficult without guaranteed sufficient cash flow.

The Alaska LNG proposal would involve transporting natural gas approximately 1,300 kilometers from extraction sites on the North Slope to processing facilities in southern Alaska for export to Asian markets. Despite these uncertainties, the joint statement indicated that Washington would facilitate the involvement of Korean vendors and suppliers in the project.

Other components of the investment package appear more concrete. A $22.3 billion natural gas power facility is planned for Encinal, Texas, designed to support co-located data centers. Led by Related Companies and NextEra Energy, the facility aims to begin commercial operations in 2029, with full completion staged through 2032. The agreement includes provisions for Korean firms to participate in equipment supply, engineering, construction, and long-term maintenance.

Additionally, $120 billion has been designated for the construction of eight large-scale nuclear reactors across the United States. This sum includes $100 billion for construction and $20 billion set aside for contingency reserves, formalized through an agreement signed by both governments and Westinghouse Electric. Trump emphasized that these initiatives would generate tens of thousands of American jobs and expand domestic manufacturing and power capacity.

3 responses to “Trump Announces $200 Billion South Korean Investment as Alaska LNG Stalls”

  1. Are those nuclear reactor numbers actually feasible? Eight reactors by 2032 seems optimistic given current construction delays nationwide.

  2. I’m surprised South Korea didn’t shy away from that $50B Alaska project. High risk, sure, but the potential payout is massive.

  3. $200 billion sounds huge, but the Alaska part is barely a whisper. Hope they keep the Texas and nuclear promises real.
