New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Donald Trump convened at Gracie Mansion on Monday, focusing their discussions on addressing the city’s housing shortage. Following the meeting, both leaders held a joint news conference to outline their collaborative vision.
Mamdani stated that he and the president agreed to establish a renewed dialogue between the city and the White House regarding the development of up to 12,000 residential units in the Sunnyside Yards area. The initiative is also projected to generate approximately 30,000 local jobs.
President Trump acknowledged that Mamdani initially raised the subject during a previous visit to the White House. While noting that the project would likely demand significant federal approvals and funding, Trump expressed cautious optimism about its feasibility.
This encounter marks the third meeting between the two officials. Their first took place in November at the White House when Mamdani was the mayor-elect, followed by a second meeting in February, also in Washington D.C. Trump was already scheduled to be in New York to address the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.
