Troubleshooting the Outlook Web Error: Your Message Can’t Be Displayed Right Now

The “Your message can’t be displayed right now” error in Outlook on the web is frequently caused by corrupted browser data. While users can clear all website cookies and cache, this broad action logs them out of every site, making it an inconvenient solution. A more targeted approach involves clearing site data specifically for Outlook.

For Microsoft Edge users, begin by disabling sync to prevent changes from propagating across devices. Navigate to Settings via the three-dot menu, go to Profiles and Sync, and turn off syncing options—remembering to re-enable them later. To remove Outlook cookies, open the Outlook website, click the lock icon in the address bar, select Cookies and site data, and then Cookies. Delete each Outlook cookie listed under Allowed, then refresh and sign back in. If the issue persists, open Developer Tools with F12, select the Application tab, go to Storage, and use the Clear selected option under Clear site data.

In Google Chrome, press F12 to open Developer Tools while on the Outlook page. Right-click the Refresh button and choose Empty Cache and Hard Reload. Should this fail, use the Site information icon next to the address bar, select Cookies and site data, then Manage on-device site data, and delete entries using the trash can icon.

Firefox users can click the Shield icon to the left of the address bar and select Clear cookies and site data, confirming the action. For Safari, go to the top toolbar, select Safari and Settings, open the Privacy section, and choose Manage Website Data. Search for Outlook, select its entries, and click Remove.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, browser extensions such as adblockers or privacy tools may be interfering with Outlook. Testing the mail service in a different browser can help determine if the problem is isolated to a specific browser environment.

  1. Why does Microsoft make clearing cookies so complicated? A single toggle in settings would be nice instead of hunting through menus.

  2. I never knew about the F12 developer trick for Chrome. That hard reload shortcut saved me so much time today.
