The Treasury Department is moving toward automatic enrollment for the popular Trump Accounts, a move that could add approximately 60 million new accounts. The initiative aims to address significantly low participation rates that have plagued the program since its launch on July 4.
Currently, families must actively opt in by filing IRS Form 4547 with their tax returns or by registering through TrumpAccounts.gov. Research indicates that this requirement has disproportionately suppressed sign-ups among low-income households. The tax-deferred investment accounts offer a one-time $1,000 deposit from the Treasury for children born between 2025 and 2028, with additional funds potentially available for qualifying families.
To streamline the process, the Social Security Administration previously announced it would introduce automatic enrollment at hospitals. This new system would register newborns for Trump Accounts at the same time parents request a Social Security number during birth registration, removing the burden of proactive application.
Is this really a new idea or just political branding for existing savings vehicles?
Automatic enrollment makes sense if the goal is actually reaching low-income families.
