A tourist bus carrying a group of Dutch nationals overturned in the mountainous terrain of south-eastern Switzerland on Thursday afternoon, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. Local authorities confirmed the incident occurred between the villages of Susch and Zernez in the canton of Graubünden.
Emergency services launched a massive response, deploying numerous rescue teams and helicopters to the remote site. Photographs from Swiss news outlets depict the coach lying on its side next to a narrow road, surrounded by ambulances and first responders attending to the scene.
According to a spokeswoman for the General Dutch Association of Travel Companies, speaking on behalf of tour operator OAD, there were 48 Dutch passengers aboard the vehicle. She told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that it was too early to determine the exact number of casualties.
The coach had departed from the Netherlands on Monday and was returning from a day trip in Switzerland after visiting Austria when the accident took place. The area near Zernez serves as a gateway to the Swiss National Park, a vast Alpine reserve spanning over 100 square kilometers in the Engadine valley.
