Three men have died and four other individuals were injured in a shooting that took place early Sunday morning at a Detroit establishment known for operating after regular hours. Police Chief Todd Bettison announced that officers responded to the incident near Eaton Avenue and Prest Street on the city’s west side at approximately 7:21 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered three males suffering from fatal wounds. Four other victims—two men and two women—were transported privately to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. While the ages of all victims have not been released, Chief Bettison confirmed that the three deceased males were approximately 30 years of age or older.
Investigators stated that the violence originated from an argument. Teferi Brent, senior director of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety, suggested the altercation may have been triggered by digital communication.
“Fights don’t have to escalate to a homicide or to a non-fatal shooting, right? If I’m hearing correctly, if it’s all over a cell phone,” Brent said.
Chief Bettison noted that the location has a history with law enforcement, revealing that police received seven calls to the address earlier this year. He described the venue as resembling a strip club and indicated it has been in operation for two decades.
Community members expressed shock at the violence. Ciera Riley, who identified one of the deceased as her 32-year-old brother and father of four, described the spot as a place for positive social interaction.
“It’s where everybody comes to just have fun and just to mellow down… Like, if you want to just chill and be, you know, good vibes, this is where you come. So for this to happen, it’s crazy. Nothing has happened over here for years,” Riley said.
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield promised “robust, wraparound services” for the families and residents affected by the tragedy. Riley struggled to maintain composure while speaking about her brother’s legacy.
“He doesn’t do any harm to anyone. He’s always a loving person. He’s here for everybody. So for someone to want to hurt him, it’s ridiculous. It’s crazy,” Riley said. “He lived for his babies.”
Police have investigative leads and are working to identify those responsible, though it was not immediately clear if any arrests had been made. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-773-2587.
