South African authorities have detained three suspects in connection with the murder of a woman in the Ekurhuleni region, east of Johannesburg. Acting police chief Lt Gen Puleng Dimpane described the detention of the suspects—a man and two women—as a significant breakthrough. She stated that officers were working around the clock to hold those responsible accountable. The trio is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
The case specifically relates to the death of Jabulile Ntimba, whose body was discovered wrapped in a sheet by a roadside in Dawn Park last Thursday. While several other victims in the recent string of killings were found partially clothed and bearing injuries, police have cautioned that it is not yet confirmed whether all the deaths are linked or if a serial killer is behind them.
Deputy police chief Lt Gen Tebello Mosikili told journalists that a team of analysts is actively investigating potential connections across all cases. However, he suggested that Ntimba’s killing may stem from personal issues, including a possible love triangle, rather than being part of the same criminal pattern as the others.
South Africa continues to grapple with one of the world’s highest rates of gender-based violence. Although official statistics do not break down murder victims by gender, a recent estimate from the South African Human Rights Commission revealed that an average of six women were killed daily between April and June of this year.
