A significant gathering of student demonstrators has assembled at the Place de la République in Lille, in northern France. The protest is part of a wave of actions continuing across the country, driven by complaints regarding insufficient funding for high schools.
BBC Europe correspondent Nick Beake reported from the scene, noting that the crowd had grown to include thousands of participants. While police forces were visible in the vicinity, there were no immediate indications of disorder or conflict at the main rally point.
The demonstration in Lille comes amid a tense backdrop for recent school protests throughout France. Over the past week, several instances of unrest have escalated into violence, resulting in clashes between demonstrators and authorities. Images from the area have shown signs of broader turmoil, including burning bins and road blockades staged by teenagers.
