The dominance of digital technology in modern cinema is partly driven by the operational challenges of traditional IMAX equipment. While the format delivers superior image quality, the physical demands of shooting with 70mm IMAX film are immense, with one of the primary hurdles being the extreme volume generated by the cameras themselves.
According to Engadget, an IMAX 15/70 film camera is not only heavy and costly to operate but also produces a relentless mechanical whine during recording. This noise stems from the enormous strip of film that must race through the mechanism while remaining perfectly flat during exposure, a process that relies on a vacuum system that adds significantly to the auditory disruption.
To understand the source of the sound, it is necessary to look at the mechanics of the format. Standard cinematic cameras typically advance film at 24 frames per second, using five sprocket holes per frame. In contrast, IMAX 15/70 cameras move film horizontally, utilizing 15 sprocket holes for each frame. This results in an image roughly three times larger than conventional 65mm formats.
At 24 frames per second, the camera processes 360 sprocket holes of film every second—amounting to 5.6 feet per second or 336 feet per minute. Each standard 1,000-foot magazine provides approximately three minutes of footage. The sheer weight and size of the film, combined with the powerful motor required to move it, create a significant mechanical rattle, a phenomenon visible in behind-the-scenes footage from productions such as Nope.
Beyond the movement of the film, the vacuum plate system contributes heavily to the noise. Because large-format film can retain curl from being wound in magazines, IMAX cameras employ suction behind the lens to hold the film flat against a plate during exposure. Any deviation from this plane can ruin the image. Maintaining this suction requires continuous air movement and pumping, resulting in a high-pitched mechanical hum that can interfere with audio recording on set.
