Today marks the beginning of a new federal initiative in Texas aimed at evaluating the viability of electric, hybrid-electric, and autonomous aircraft. The program is moving forward even as regulatory frameworks governing this emerging technology remain under development.
Earlier this year, the Federal Aviation Administration selected eight state-led projects through its Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). These projects represent some of the first public trials for such aircraft in the United States.
The Texas leg of the program features three major eVTOL manufacturers: Joby, Beta, and Wisk. For the coming week, these companies will conduct test flights designed to demonstrate potential future aerial routes and operational capabilities.
