Tesla has introduced a new safety feature allowing drivers to uncouple their charging cable and drive away immediately during emergencies. The update follows a mass shooting at a Supercharger station in Twin Falls, Idaho, in August, where seven people were wounded and four died.
Under normal circumstances, Tesla vehicles lock the charging plug into the port and disable driving to prevent accidental detachment. To drive, owners must typically manually release the cable first. Following the Idaho incident, Tesla received numerous requests from owners for a faster exit mechanism in critical situations.
The company responded this week with a software update that provides a quick-release option, enabling drivers to escape the charging station without delay when facing an emergency.
