Following his appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival for Apple’s Tenzing, actor Tenzin Dalha has been officially unveiled as the male lead in the upcoming Bengali-language thriller Chheledhora. He will star opposite acclaimed actress Swastika Mukherjee in the Indo-American co-production.
The casting decision was deliberately kept under wraps when the project was first announced earlier this year, at which time only Mukherjee was confirmed. Producers chose to reveal Dalha’s involvement now, capitalizing on the international attention his recent role in Tenzing has garnered.
Tenzing, a gala presentation at TIFF, stars Genden Phuntsok as the legendary mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, alongside Tom Hiddleston, Willem Dafoe, and Caitríona Balfe. The film is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on October 9, followed by global streaming on Apple TV starting October 16.
Written and directed by Shieladitya Moulik, known for Sweater and Surjo, Chheledhora centers on a narrative triggered by parental defiance. Mukherjee portrays Brishti, a divorced mother who temporarily “steals” her daughter for a birthday trip, only for the child to be subsequently abducted. This incident pulls a circle of flawed adults and their children into a chaotic journey through Northeast India, where the younger generation serves as the moral guiding light for the grown-ups.
The production, which is currently in post-production, was filmed extensively in the Ziro Valley of Arunachal Pradesh. It blends elements of family drama, thriller suspense, and dark humor, deeply incorporating the cultural landscape of India’s Northeast.
Ann Mukherjee, founder of Sita22 Films, explained the strategic delay in announcing the casting. “We made a very conscious decision not to announce Tenzin when we first revealed ‘Chheledhora,'” she said. “We knew he had this extraordinary international moment ahead of him with ‘Tenzing,’ and TIFF felt like exactly the right time for audiences to discover another side of him.”
She added that Dalha brings a “quiet emotional intelligence and restraint” that contrasts effectively with Mukherjee’s powerful screen presence, noting that their chemistry is pivotal to the film.
Dalha described the timing as “particularly special,” highlighting the thematic connections between his two recent projects. “They are completely different films, yet rooted in human grit, empathy, the lengths to which humans are capable of going for people they love,” he said. He praised Moulik’s writing for portraying characters as “imperfect complex beings” rather than simplistic moral archetypes.
Speaking about his co-star, Dalha called Mukherjee “a force of nature in frame and a force of joy on set.” He also noted that the Arunachal landscape was integral to the film’s atmosphere, with the local weather helping to set the tone for the thriller.
Chheledhora is produced by Ann Mukherjee for Sita22 Films, with Jitin Hingorani serving as co-producer and creative producer, Dhanraj Sawant as executive producer, and Priyangi Borthakur as supervising producer. Italian cinematographer Vincenzo Condorelli handled photography.
Hingorani, who also leads content and development at Sita22, emphasized that the Northeast setting is essential to the story’s emotional language. “The idea was never to make a Bengali film that simply happens to travel to the Northeast,” he stated. “The journey changes these characters… Pairing Swastika and Tenzin gives us two performers coming from very different cinematic and cultural energies, and that tension is part of what makes the film so exciting.”
He concluded that the film embodies Sita22’s mission to tell stories that are both hyper-local and globally resonant.
As someone from the region, I am thrilled to see Ziro Valley portrayed authentically on the big screen.
