Diplomatic friction has intensified between Ukraine and South Korea following remarks made by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the United Nations, which appeared to expose a confidential arrangement regarding the transfer of North Korean prisoners of war. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung accused Kyiv of undermining his administration and called for a formal apology from Ukraine.
Lee stated that Zelenskyy’s comments suggesting an imminent military clash between the Koreas amounted to invoking the risk of war on the peninsula. In a social media post on Friday, the South Korean president emphasized that the issue pertains to the honor of the Republic of Korea and its people, declaring that the matter cannot be disregarded.
The controversy centers on Zelenskyy’s address to the UN General Assembly, where he revealed that Kyiv had transferred two captured North Korean soldiers to Seoul after they were found fighting for Russia in the Kursk region. South Korea had requested secrecy regarding the transfer, with senior presidential secretary Seong Ghi-hong confirming that Ukraine had discussed the move through various channels and asked for discretion. However, Ukrainian officials maintain that no confidentiality agreement was ever established.
In an effort to de-escalate tensions, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the situation as a “diplomatic misunderstanding” rather than an incident during an interview with RBC-Ukraine. He expressed hope for continued cooperation with South Korea, noting the country’s importance to Ukraine.
The diplomatic row involves two major US-aligned nations with significant military capabilities, potentially complicating Washington’s efforts to build a unified global front against Russia, China, and North Korea. Seoul has demanded both an official apology and a detailed explanation from Kyiv regarding the disclosure.
Ukraine denying any secrecy pact is suspicious. Why disclose it at all if it was truly confidential? Feels like a major diplomatic misstep.
Wow, I had no idea North Korean POWs were even fighting for Russia. That’s a wild twist to the whole conflict.
