Diplomatic tensions between the United Kingdom and Israel have intensified following the implementation of British sanctions targeting illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The measures were introduced in direct response to Israel’s decision to open tenders for new housing construction in the strategically significant E1 corridor, located to the east of Jerusalem.
The proposed development has faced widespread condemnation across the international community due to its potential to effectively split the West Bank into two disconnected sections and further isolate East Jerusalem. In retaliation for the UK’s stance, Israeli authorities have enacted a series of counter-measures aimed at British nationals and organizations operating within the region.
Lucy Williamson, the BBC’s Middle East Correspondent, traveled to the area to assess the situation on the ground. She visited Khan al Ahmar, a Palestinian community situated within the designated E1 zone, as well as the adjacent Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim, to document the realities of life in this contested territory.
