Tennessee Death Row Inmate Survives Botched Execution, Remains on Ventilator

A Tennessee woman sentenced to death has survived a botched lethal injection, leaving her unconscious and dependent on a ventilator, according to court filings released Thursday night. Her legal team is now pursuing a commutation of her sentence following the incident.

Christa Pike, 50, was administered two doses of pentobarbital on Wednesday in an attempt to carry out her execution. However, the procedure failed to cause death, and she was subsequently transported by ambulance to a hospital in Nashville, where she remains in critical condition.

Pike was originally convicted and sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer. Her attorneys argue that the failed execution underscores the complications surrounding capital punishment and are seeking to have her death sentence reduced.

The incident has reignited scrutiny over execution protocols and the welfare of death row inmates following medical emergencies during state-sanctioned killings.

  1. Unconscious on a ventilator after 28 years on death row. This case keeps getting more horrifying by the day.

  2. Does surviving this actually prevent a third attempt, or does Tennessee just keep trying? The protocol seems dangerously flawed.

  3. Two doses? This isn’t medicine, it’s a lethal gamble. The legal team is right to push for commutation now.
