Northumbria Police have formally identified three young people who lost their lives after their vehicle went into the River Wear in Sunderland. The victims have been named as 17-year-old Jackson Duke, and 16-year-olds Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw.
The incident occurred just before 13:30 BST on Tuesday near Panns Bank, close to Wearmouth Bridge. A black Audi A3 left the roadway and plunged into the river with four occupants inside. While three died, a 17-year-old boy managed to escape the vehicle and reach safety.
Authorities confirmed that the surviving teen has been taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. An investigation is currently underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash, including identifying who was behind the wheel at the time.
Local details released by the force indicate that Jackson and Luke were from Sunderland, while Zara resided in Houghton-le-Spring, a town located approximately 11km (seven miles) from the city.
Ch Supt Scott Cowie, the area commander for Sunderland, expressed sorrow for the families affected. He described the previous 24 hours as bringing “unimaginable agony and heartbreak” to the loved ones of Luke, Jackson, and Zara. Noting that all three had their entire futures ahead of them, he emphasized how much they would be missed and highlighted the broader impact on the community.
Cowie also urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding the event, warning that such commentary could further distress the families involved. He encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Sunderland College issued a statement expressing that they were “deeply saddened” by the deaths of three of their students. A spokesperson described the event as a heartbreaking loss for both the college community and the wider city of Sunderland, offering condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
Police divers have remained at the scene as investigations continue.
