Talarico Accuses Paxton of AI Deception in Senate Race

Texas State Representative James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, alleged on Wednesday that his Republican opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton, is deceiving Texas voters through the use of artificial intelligence in campaign advertising.

Talarico criticized a recently released ad that features an AI-generated likeness of himself reading from a fictional “King James Talarico” Bible. The spot references Talarico’s past remarks regarding gender and Christianity, which he argues are misrepresented by the deepfake content.

“When you look at this ad, they are using AI in order to mislead the people of this state, and that is completely consistent with a liar like Ken Paxton,” Talarico told CBS News’ Ed O’Keefe. When pressed on whether the statements attributed to him in the video were accurate, Talarico clarified, “Not all of those statements.”

The Democrat pointed to Paxton’s 2023 impeachment by the Texas House of Representatives on charges including bribery, obstruction of justice, and abuse of public trust as evidence of a pattern of dishonesty. Talarico also highlighted a recent endorsement from Paxton’s former director of law enforcement, who appeared in a separate advertisement supporting Talarico’s candidacy.

“I am confident that Democrats, independents and Republicans are going to reject Ken Paxton because we don’t want a criminal representing us in the halls of power in Washington,” Talarico stated.

In contrast to his opponent’s digital tactics, Talarico emphasized that his campaign relies exclusively on human-produced advertisements. The two candidates are set to clash in November in what is projected to be one of the costliest Senate races in U.S. history.

Paxton secured the Republican nomination in May after defeating long-serving incumbent Senator John Cornyn. Democrats view the contest as a potential opportunity to break Texas’s streak of sending Republicans to the Senate, which has lasted since 1988. The race is considered pivotal for Senate control, with the Cook Political Report recently upgrading its assessment of the matchup from leaning Republican to a toss-up.

Speaking at a grocery drive, Talarico drew a sharp contrast between his efforts to assist struggling Texans and what he described as a Republican billionaire gathering in Dallas. He argued that voters are weary of political theatrics and desire a senator focused on bipartisanship and economic relief.

“I have a track record of doing that,” Talarico said, citing his legislative history. “So I’m asking Texans to judge me based on my legislative record.”

Talarico expressed optimism about a shifting political landscape in Texas, describing the current movement as distinct from the 2018 race between Beto O’Rourke and Ted Cruz. He attributed this energy to a voter desire for traditional values such as honesty and integrity, asserting that these principles are poised to make a resurgence in the upcoming election.
