A suspect was arrested on Sunday following an incident at the Canfield Fair in which he lunged at Democratic Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton, according to campaign officials. The encounter resulted in injuries to multiple individuals, though Acton herself was not harmed.
Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman Chris Anderson stated that the individual knocked volunteers to the ground and was apprehended with “multiple weapons” in possession.
Addie Bullock, communications director for Acton’s campaign, expressed gratitude for the rapid response by law enforcement and offered prayers for the injured. In a statement, the campaign condemned the event, asserting that such violence has no place in Ohio and reaffirming Acton’s commitment to standing against political vitriol and division.
Acton is currently competing against Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in the upcoming election. Ramaswamy, who has leveraged his national profile and ties to President Donald Trump to secure significant fundraising, has utilized advertising and rallies to criticize Acton, the former state public health director.
Ramaswamy’s camp also weighed in on the incident, with communications director Connie Luck calling the attack unacceptable. She emphasized that candidates should be able to engage with voters without fear of threats or physical harm, adding that the party hopes those injured recover well.
Authorities, including the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department, have not yet issued detailed public statements regarding the arrest or investigation.
Did anyone get a clear look at the suspect? This happened way too fast for details to be clear yet.
So relieved Amy Acton wasn’t hurt. Hope the volunteers recover quickly from this terrifying ordeal.
