A pair of spiral galaxies engaged in a gravitational dance has been captured by the Gemini North telescope on Maunakea in Hawaii, showcasing not only cosmic mechanics but also the cultural perspective of the students who identified it. The image of NGC 7253 bears the Hawaiian name Nā ‘Uhane Māhoe Huki Pū i ke Ola, which translates to “The Twin Spirits Pulling Together Creating Life.”
The discovery was made by students from Waiākea High School and the Volcano School of Arts and Sciences through the Project Hōkūlani internship. Samantha Silva-Sampaio explained that the theme of ‘uhane, or spirit, was central to the group’s experience. “Our experiences throughout the week — ‘oli (stargazing), visiting the summit and learning about the awesome scientific discoveries made possible by Maunakea — ignited our own spirits as we prepare for life after high school,” she said.
The students described “Huki Pū” as representing the physical pulling together of the galaxies, analogous to communities uniting to achieve collective discovery. The phrase “i ke Ola” highlights that such galactic interactions spark new star formation, offering hope that one day astronomers might find another sun hosting life.
Located approximately 200 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus—also known in Hawaiian tradition as Ka Lupe o Kawelo—the merger presents a remarkably sharp view of two galaxies interacting. While galaxy mergers are common across the universe, including the future collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda, they often appear chaotic. However, because galaxies are mostly empty space, actual collisions between stars are rare. Instead, the mixing of interstellar gas and dust triggers intense star birth, likely resulting in a sparkled final product for NGC 7253.
Manu Silva-Sampaio, another student discoverer, emphasized the dual nature of their work: “‘Uhane in this image reminds us that astronomy is not just science or spirit; it’s both at the same time.” The image credit is attributed to the International Gemini Observatory/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA.
