Storm Isaias Claims 4 Lives Across Southern US as Post-Tropical Cyclone

The United States is grappling with the aftermath of Storm Isaias, which has left four people dead as it traverses the southern region. Officials confirmed on Saturday that two fatalities occurred in Florida and two in Alabama.

Isaias originally made landfall on Friday evening near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 hurricane, marking the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season. Since then, the system has weakened into a post-tropical cyclone and continues moving northward through Tennessee, Kentucky, and toward West Virginia, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The severe weather event brought torrential rainfall and powerful winds, resulting in widespread destruction including ripped-off roofs and downed trees. In Milton, Florida, aerial footage showed significant structural damage, including an apartment complex with its roof torn away and a tree collapsed against a home. The Florida Division of Emergency Management reported that roughly 5,000 National Guard personnel have been activated to assist affected communities.

Data from PowerOutage.com indicates that more than 500,000 customers across Florida and Alabama are currently without electricity. In response to the crisis, states of emergency have been declared in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia, with evacuation orders issued in several counties.

The NHC continues to warn of hazardous conditions, including flash and urban flooding, as well as the potential for landslides in the Southern Appalachians. Additional threats include wind gusts, further power outages, and life-threatening surf and rip currents along the Gulf coasts of the United States, Mexico, and western Cuba. A few tornadoes remain possible across eastern Georgia and the Carolinas.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Simon has strengthened to Category 4 intensity as it approaches Mexico’s Pacific coast, with landfall expected on Sunday near the tourist hub of Puerto Vallarta.
