A man who drugged and raped his wife for more than 20 years without her knowledge has been removed from an ongoing trial involving multiple other defendants, a jury at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court was told.
The husband, aged in his 60s and residing in the Stockport area of Greater Manchester, has pleaded guilty to a total of 60 offenses against the woman. The charges include rape, assault by penetration, administering a substance with intent, and sharing indecent images without consent.
Twelve other men remain set to stand trial at the same court, facing accusations of serious sexual offenses, including rape, against the same victim. Additionally, a 14th man has already entered a guilty plea to separate sexual offenses involving the complainant.
The jury, comprising nine women and three men along with two female reserve jurors, was informed that the husband had admitted to abusing his wife since 2004. While he had previously pleaded guilty to 15 offenses dating back to 2022, he admitted to a further 45 counts on Monday. His wife, supported by family members, watched from the public gallery as he entered his pleas.
Trial judge Maurice Greene addressed the jury, reminding them that upon being sworn in on 4 September, they were provided with a questionnaire outlining the prosecution case. He noted that they were told 14 men had been identified, one of whom was the husband.
“No doubt you will be wondering why you have not been back since,” Judge Greene said. He acknowledged that some jurors may have seen news reports regarding a man from Stockport pleading guilty to drugging and raping his wife, noting that his identity is prohibited in the public domain to protect his wife’s anonymity.
“Of course the man who pleaded guilty was [the husband], so he will no longer be a defendant in this case,” the judge explained. He stated that work remains for the parties involved due to these new pleas.
The remaining defendants facing trial are Philip Wild, 58; Sean Peers, 38; Jordan Wallace, 31; Alan Keelan, 42; Jonathan Kirk, 43; Robert Stewart, 70; Mohammed Sabir, 28; Graham Brougham, 74; Richard Townsend, 37; Karl Lindsay, 55; Daniel Rayner, 42; and David Graves, 59.
Allegations against the other defendants include sexual abuse occurring since September 2018. Judge Greene indicated that the prosecution is expected to open the case on 5 October, with the trial projected to conclude by 18 December.
It’s sickening that twelve others are still facing trial while he got out of it. Justice for her must be complicated.
