During the ceremony honoring Greg Daniels with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the ‘The Office’ creator disclosed that he once intended for his former collaborator Steve Carell to portray his father, Aaron Daniels, in a biographical film.
Daniels explained that he penned the spec script for Carell during the 2008 writers strike, a period when writers were permitted to develop uncommissioned projects. The film would have chronicled Aaron Daniels’ participation in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.
According to Daniels, his father competed in a demonstration sport that was similar to jai alai but utilized paddles. He described the event as a rare sport that allowed him to qualify alongside friends.
Carell, who also spoke at the Thursday morning event alongside Conan O’Brien, reflected on the difficult early reception of ‘The Office.’ He recalled that many industry figures advised against the project, predicting it would fail because the original British series was superior. However, Carell credited Daniels with saving the show from becoming a disappointment.
Daniels also addressed rumors regarding a potential revival or reboot of the hit series. He dismissed the idea, stating that the nine-season conclusion provided sufficient closure for the characters. He argued that reopening the story would risk undermining the positive fan reception of the finale.
‘The Office,’ which debuted in 2005, ran for nine seasons before concluding in 2013. Daniels adapted the American version from the acclaimed British television series of the same name.
Carell in a biopic? The timing is funny. I still laugh every time he’s on screen, so this would’ve been gold.
Honestly, Greg Daniels made the right call. The Office ending is perfect as is; rebooting it would just ruin the magic.
