Stephanie Cole, the acclaimed actress celebrated for her work in the wartime drama Tenko, the soap opera Coronation Street, and the medical comedy Doc Martin, has died at the age of 84.
A statement released by her agent, John Grant, on behalf of her family confirmed that the performer had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years. The statement praised Cole as an “extraordinary talent” whose distinguished career featured numerous iconic theatre and television roles, noting her dedication to supporting mental health charities.
Born in Solihull, Cole began her professional journey after training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, making her stage debut at just 17 years old as Madame Arcati in Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit.
She achieved widespread recognition in the 1980s for her portrayal of Dr. Beatrice Mason in the BBC series Tenko, which followed British women imprisoned by the Japanese in Singapore during World War II. During the same era, she gained popularity as Mrs. Delphine Featherstone, known as “The Black Widow,” in the Ronnie Barker sitcom Open All Hours.
Cole’s versatility allowed her to win the award for best TV comedy actress for her role as Diana Trent in Waiting For God. She often cited her performance as Muriel in Alan Bennett’s Soldiering On, performed alongside Maggie Smith and Julie Walters, as one of her proudest professional achievements.
Her television portfolio extended to Playing the part of Sylvia Goodwin, the mother of Roy Cropper, in Coronation Street from 2011, a role that earned her a comedy prize at the 2012 British Soap Awards while she was in her 70s. Other notable credits included roles in Keeping Mum, the Radio 4 sitcom Cabin Pressure, and Gentleman Jack alongside Suranne Jones.
In addition to her screen work, Cole maintained a robust stage career, appearing in productions such as Driving Miss Daisy, Noises Off, A Passionate Woman, and King Lear. Her final major television appearance was in the BBC comedy series The Cleaner in 2021.
Cole was appointed an OBE in 2005 in recognition of her services to drama, the elderly, and mental health charities. She was married twice, first to Henry Marshall and later to actor Peter Birrel, who passed away in 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Emma Battcock.
