The Golden State Warriors have officially agreed to terms on a two-year, $116 million (£88 million) extension with superstar guard Steph Curry, a report first broken by ESPN. The agreement includes a player option for the final season in 2028-29, allowing the franchise leader to retain some control over his immediate future.
The structure of the deal ensures that Curry will earn up to $178.5 million over the next three years when combined with the final year of his previous agreement, which he signed in August 2024. After completing the $62.6 million extension for the 2026-27 season, the new contract kicks in, carrying him through his historic 20th campaign. His salary is projected to be $55.7 million in 2027-28, with a player option worth $60.2 million for the 2028-29 season.
Curry, who will turn 39 this season, emphasized that maintaining team competitiveness and flexibility was a priority during negotiations. “We’re in a very interesting situation,” the two-time MVP told ESPN. “All the different salary cap conditions of whether I sign for a max or less or whatever it is, I want to be on a competitive team. I want to have an opportunity to have some flexibility because we haven’t had that in years past… Those are always just the considerations.”
He further noted the unique circumstances surrounding the decision, citing the team’s history and their “absolute desperation to win.” Despite the complex financial landscape, Curry expressed enthusiasm about returning to play. “The idea of getting back to work is exciting,” he said. “I feel like there’s no hesitation about where I’m at physically going in. But I’m excited about getting back to work.”
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy had previously indicated optimism about reaching a deal with the career leader in three-pointers made. Curry’s most recent season was hampered by injuries, limiting him to 43 games where he averaged 26.6 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.6 rebounds. He has contributed to four championship runs with Golden State, most recently capturing the title in 2022.
The signing marks a significant milestone in NBA history, pushing Curry’s total career on-court earnings to $652 million. He becomes the first player in league history to surpass the $600 million mark in salary and earnings combined.
Happy to see him stay! It wouldn’t feel like the modern Warriors without Steph leading the charge. Let’s go Dubs!
Wow, $116 million for two years when he’s 39? Some of us think this is a massive risk for Golden State’s future payroll.
A player option at 39? That is surprisingly smart. Keeps the Warriors flexible if he can’t stay healthy, which has been a real concern lately.
Six hundred fifty-two million. No one will ever touch that number in basketball history. Truly unprecedented wealth for one player.
