Starbucks has formally rejected speculation that the coffee giant was considering an acquisition of Chipotle Mexican Grill. A company spokesperson stated that the notion is false, noting that Chipotle holds a market valuation of approximately $47 billion. Instead, the retailer emphasized that its resources are dedicated to executing its existing strategic plan to drive expansion.
“Our team is laser-focused on executing our Back to Starbucks strategy. We have strong momentum and confidence in our long-term growth potential,” the spokesperson told CBS News. The company also indicated it would provide fourth-quarter financial results and guidance for fiscal year 2027 later in the month.
The denial follows a period of significant market volatility for Chipotle. Shares of the restaurant chain surged as much as 8% the previous week after the Financial Times published a report alleging that Starbucks had been discussing a potential deal to buy the burrito maker.
Despite the surge in trading activity, many industry experts viewed the reported talks with skepticism. Analysts at TD Cowen characterized a merger between the two companies as a “low-probability outcome,” suggesting that Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol is more likely to concentrate on his current turnaround initiative.
Niccol brings direct experience from the fast-casual sector, having previously served as CEO of Chipotle before departing in August 2024. Since his departure, Chipotle’s stock performance has weakened, with the share price dropping roughly 50% from its peak and losing about 20% of its value over the last twelve months.
