Sri Lanka’s High Court has convicted 15 men charged with orchestrating the devastating Easter Sunday bombings in 2019, which resulted in the deaths of 270 individuals and injured more than 500 others. Among those found guilty is Naufer Moulavi, whom prosecutors identified as the mastermind behind the suicide attacks.
The coordinated explosions targeted three churches and three luxury hotels in the country, marking the deadliest incident in Sri Lanka since the conclusion of its civil war in 2009. The attacks claimed the lives of 45 foreigners. While all the bombers died during the blasts, nine other defendants were acquitted by the court.
The trial involved a massive volume of proceedings, with the accused facing over 23,000 charges that included murder, conspiracy to commit terrorism, and possession of firearms. The prosecution presented testimony from more than 2,300 witnesses and submitted 2,076 pieces of evidence, ranging from explosives and weapons to swords.
Investigators attributed the attacks to Islamist extremists, noting that the 25 men originally indicted belonged to Sri Lanka’s Muslim minority; one suspect died while in custody. In the aftermath of the tragedy, authorities acknowledged a significant failure in intelligence gathering. Parliament was informed that a warning from India regarding the impending attacks was not effectively disseminated to relevant officials.
Legal consequences for security failures have already begun to materialize. In 2023, the Supreme Court ordered former President Maithripala Sirisena to pay substantial compensation to victims, ruling that national security lapses contributed to the attacks. Additionally, two former senior officials received death sentences last month for criminal negligence. However, due to a long-standing moratorium on executions in Sri Lanka, such sentences are typically commuted to life imprisonment.
The verdict follows years of public demonstrations across the nation, where citizens have consistently demanded justice for the victims of the Easter attacks.
