SpaceX Starship Reaches Orbit for First Time, Deploys 26 Starlink Satellites

SpaceX marked a significant milestone in its development of the Starship system when its 14th test flight successfully entered low-Earth orbit. This launch, which utilized the Super Heavy megarocket as its first stage, represents the first time the vehicle has reached this orbital regime.

The mission commenced early on Monday but encountered technical challenges, specifically the loss of one of the six Raptor engines on the upper stage. Despite this anomaly, engineers decided to proceed with the launch sequence. Consequently, the original flight plan was adjusted; instead of the intended six-orbit profile lasting nearly 10 hours, the spacecraft remained in orbit for approximately three hours before reentering Earth’s atmosphere and making a targeted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

A key objective of Flight 14 was the deployment of 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites. SpaceX confirmed that its communications team has established contact with all newly deployed units. These satellites are designed to enhance internet speeds for customers within the existing Starlink constellation. While previous Starship flights had carried similar hardware, those missions remained suborbital and served primarily to test connectivity without achieving stable orbit.

In addition to testing the orbital capabilities of Starship, the mission also served to evaluate the reusability of the Super Heavy booster. After providing the necessary thrust for insertion, the first stage executed a landing in the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike the previous demonstration where the booster was captured by launch tower arms, this instance involved a controlled ocean landing, with the vehicle scheduled for future recovery.
