SpaceX has purchased a portfolio of low-band spectrum licenses, a strategic acquisition the company states will enable its Starlink Mobile service to establish itself as a major wireless carrier in the United States. The move positions SpaceX to directly rival established giants T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon.
Once the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) finalizes its approval of the deal, SpaceX plans to deploy a hybrid network architecture that integrates its satellite-to-mobile constellation with traditional terrestrial mobile infrastructure.
The acquired licenses provide up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum within the 800 MHz band. According to SpaceX, this specific frequency range is capable of penetrating through walls and buildings, potentially addressing common connectivity issues associated with satellite services. This acquisition builds upon the company’s previous purchase of 2GHz spectrum.
Honestly, I just want cheaper bills. If Starlink Mobile undercuts the big three, I’m switching immediately.
FCC approval is a big hurdle. Given the current regulatory climate, this might take longer than SpaceX hopes for.
I’m still skeptical about satellite calling. My phone signal drops the moment I walk into a basement. Will this actually fix dead zones?
Low-band spectrum is crucial for indoor coverage. Smart move acquiring that specific 800 MHz range instead of just high-band.
This could really shake up the wireless market if they pull it off. Competition is always good for consumers.
