South Africa delivered a commanding performance on the fifth and final day of the first Test against Australia at the Sahara Stadium in Green Point, Cape Town, to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
The Proteas finished the tour as dominant Test nation No.1, with their victory over the top-ranked Australian side marking a significant milestone. It is the first time South Africa has held the top spot in the ICC Test rankings since May 2014.
Kagiso Rabada was named player of the match for his spell of 3-66, but he was supported by an exceptional all-round team performance that also featured Keshav Maharaj’s 2-107 and David Miller’s match-winning 65 not out. The win extends South Africa’s unbeaten home record against Australia to seven consecutive Tests.
Australia, despite their strong overall form, were unable to withstand the pressure. Their last Test victory on South African soil dates back to November 2018. Mitchell Starc led the Australian bowling with figures of 3-63, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.
The series now shifts to Durban for the second Test, which begins on Friday, October 16, with play starting at 08:00 BST (10:00 local time). Live coverage will be available across Sky Sports’ digital platforms, the NOW streaming service, and the BBC Test Match Extra podcast.
Seven wins in a row at home against the Aussies! This dominance is impressive. Anyone else think the pitches in Durban might favor the visitors more?
Miller’s unbeaten 65 was absolutely crucial. I’m surprised Australia didn’t have a plan for that middle order. Hope they bounce back in Durban.
Finally back at number one after twelve years! The team played with such grit and determination today. What a historic moment for South African cricket.
