Saturday Night Live turned its satirical gaze toward the artificial intelligence sector’s recent cascade of existential warnings, featuring cast member Jane Wickline as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. The segment aired during the Weekend Update portion of the show, highlighting the growing public discourse around AI safety and corporate responsibility.
Michael Che, the segment’s host, opened the bit with noticeable hesitation regarding the pronunciation of Amodei’s surname. He characterized the Anthropic leader as having navigated a challenging press tour, during which he appeared to align with a former employee’s assertion that AI could potentially annihilate humanity.
Wickline’s portrayal depicted Amodei wearing a prominent wig and delivering stuttering responses that occasionally fractured into a dramatic, Gollum-esque internal conflict. In one moment of the sketch, the character confessed, “AI is the devil and I its maker.” The fictional CEO also offered a bleak assessment of industry ethics, stating, “We do not condone what we are doing,” while clarifying that AI is “a tool for building weapons” rather than a weapon itself. She further urged viewers to pressure her into ceasing development.
When addressing the potential medical benefits of the technology, such as the possibility of eradicating cancer, the character offered a cautiously optimistic but statistically modest projection. “Put it this way: In 10 years, there’s about a 10% chance that cancer won’t be a problem for anyone,” Wickline said, underscoring the sketch’s critical tone toward executive promises.
