Snapchat Introduces ‘Plans’ Feature for Organizing IRL Events

Snapchat is reintroducing a classic social media utility with the launch of “Snapchat Plans,” a feature designed to facilitate in-person gatherings among its user base. The company aims to streamline the organization of meetups for groups of up to 200 attendees directly within the application.

According to Snap, over a third of its core users already rely on group chats to coordinate social get-togethers. The new “My Plans” section on user profiles provides a dedicated space to manage events and track invitations. When an organizer creates an event, invites are distributed via direct messages, and recipients can respond using standard RSVP options: “going,” “can’t go,” or “maybe.” The interface also incorporates Snapchat-specific customization, such as Bitmoji-themed cover art.

All events created through this feature are private by default, visible only to the creator and their invitees, although invited guests can view the full guest list. Notably, the initial release lacks the ability to add location details, despite the app’s existing and widely used Snap Map functionality. A spokesperson confirmed to Engadget that the company is actively developing location-addition capabilities, though it remains uncertain whether the feature will integrate with Snap Map.

The launch highlights an interesting pivot for a platform that has previously distinguished itself from traditional social media networks. While the absence of location tagging may seem like a significant oversight for coordinating real-world events, the move suggests Snapchat is betting on its understanding of how younger demographics socialize and organize.
