On Thursday, Shopify unveiled Canvas, a novel site-building platform that enables merchants to construct their online stores through conversational prompts rather than manual code editing or visual drag-and-drop interfaces. This launch marks a significant step in Shopify’s effort to lower the barrier to entry for e-commerce, particularly for users who lack coding expertise or the budget to hire professional developers.
Previously, Shopify’s no-code builder allowed users to arrange modular sections and blocks within pre-selected themes. While effective for basic setups, achieving deeper customizations typically required writing code or engaging a web developer. Canvas changes this dynamic by integrating Shopify’s AI assistant, Sidekick, directly into the site-building workflow. Users simply describe their desired changes in a chat interface, and Sidekick applies them instantly.
The tool offers a live, interactive preview of the actual store code. As merchants request adjustments, they can observe the results in real time, test full interactivity and animations, and view the layout across various screen sizes. To ensure accuracy, Sidekick captures screenshots of the updates, allowing the AI to visually verify the changes against the merchant’s requests. Although direct element clicking remains an option, the primary mode of interaction is expected to be natural language commands.
While Sidekick has existed prior to this launch—having been used for tasks such as writing code, building apps, and customizing themes—Canvas represents its first iteration as a comprehensive, visual site-building product. To facilitate this, Shopify modified the theme architecture to make the store’s structure, logic, and design more accessible for the AI to interpret and modify.
Canvas joins a growing market of AI-driven website creation tools from competitors such as Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Framer, Lovable, and Replit. Though the product is still in its early stages and will require further refinement, it aims to make online selling more accessible to a broader range of entrepreneurs by eliminating the need for technical skills.
