Shopify Enables Browser-Based AI Agents to Complete Purchases at Checkout

While major retailers such as Amazon and Adidas have taken steps to restrict artificial intelligence agents from purchasing goods on their behalf, Shopify is pursuing the opposite strategy. On Monday, the e-commerce platform announced that browser-based AI agents can now complete transactions at checkout for merchants using its services, expanding their functionality beyond product searches and cart additions.

Previously, Shopify supported WebMCP (Model Context Protocol) for its storefronts and shopping carts. This allowed AI agents to browse inventory, locate items, and add them to a cart. With the new update, WebMCP support now covers checkout processes, including Shop Pay. According to the company, this enables agents to view the checkout screen, modify details, and submit orders with the buyer’s explicit authorization, eliminating the need for screenshots or web scraping.

The rollout introduces three specific tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. These functions permit agents to inspect order details, adjust shipping addresses or delivery options, and place orders once authorized by the user.

Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager at Shopify focusing on agentic commerce, confirmed in a post on X that the feature is being rolled out to all eligible merchants. He emphasized that agents operating within a buyer’s browser should utilize these WebMCP tools rather than navigating HTML designed for humans. The tools provide structured APIs built on Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to ensure accurate commerce data, proper disclosures, and seamless handoffs.

Shopify already hosts a server-to-server MCP implementation, while the proposed WebMCP standard is tailored for agents running inside the user’s browser. Both protocols rely on UCP to facilitate product discovery, cart building, and checkout.

Leading AI agents, including Meta’s Muse and Instinct, already maintain direct partnerships with Shopify for agentic commerce. The collaboration with Instinct was announced on the same day as the checkout update.
