Seare Denies Ingebrigtsen in Copenhagen 5km Thriller

Dawit Seare produced a stunning late charge to win the men’s 5km title at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, denying Norwegian star Jakob Ingebrigtsen the victory. The Eritrean athlete found a decisive reserve of speed in the closing stages to overtake the two-time Olympic champion and secure gold for his country.

Ingebrigtsen, 26, was making only his sixth appearance of an injury-plagued season. His most recent race had been just eight days prior, where he captured the 5,000m title on the track in Budapest. Although the Norwegian appeared to be fading from medal contention until the final kilometer, he powered forward to take the lead before Seare caught and passed him in the dying meters. Seare crossed the line with a winning time of 12 minutes and 56 seconds, while Ingebrigtsen’s compatriot Saymon Amanuel took bronze.

In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw demonstrated complete dominance. Just six days after winning the $150,000 prize for the 5,000m track event in Budapest, Amebaw controlled the 5km from the front. She made an early breakaway and won in a commanding fashion with a time of 14:41. Caroline Gitonga of Kenya finished second, seven seconds behind, and Australia’s Rose Davies took bronze. Britain’s Hannah Nuttall placed 10th in 15:08.

In other events, Germany’s Robert Farken secured a surprise victory in the men’s mile. American Yared Nuguse led from the start but was overtaken in the final 100 meters as Farken clocked 3:51.80 for his first major title. Britain’s Jake Heyward ran a personal best of 3:55.76, finishing 11th.

Agathe Guillemot of France won the women’s mile in 4:22.74, recording the fastest road time globally this year after executing a perfectly timed attack to beat Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu. Kenya’s Mirriam Cherop finished third, while Britain’s Katie Snowden placed 16th. The half-marathon titles are scheduled to be decided on Sunday, concluding the two-day running festival in the Danish capital.
