Scotland have recalled Sam Kerr and Martha Thomas to their squad for the upcoming Women’s World Cup play-off first leg against the Czech Republic.
Head coach Melissa Andreatta announced the changes on Tuesday, marking the first call-ups for both experienced players in nearly a year.
Kerr, who currently plays for Liverpool, was last selected in February 2025 when she came off the bench in a match against the Netherlands. Thomas, who joined Newcastle United in the summer, earned her 50th cap in October 2024 during a friendly loss to Switzerland.
The two will be key figures as Scotland prepare for a crucial two-legged tie. The first match takes place on October 9 in Pardubice, east of Prague, with the return leg scheduled for October 13 at St Mirren Park in Paisley.
Andreatta’s side topped their qualifying group on goal difference, finishing ahead of second-placed Belgium. They are now just four games away from reaching their first major tournament since the 2019 World Cup, having missed the past two European Championships and the 2023 World Cup.
Other returnees include club-mate Freya Gregory and Como defender Sophie Howard, who were unable to feature in the previous camp due to injuries sustained during the qualifier double-header against Israel. Celtic midfielder Maria McAneny also returns to the fold.
Conversely, defenders Leah Eddie and Kenzie Weir, along with forwards Eilidh Adams and Laura Berry, have been omitted from the squad. Youngster Mia McAulay retains her place despite being a late addition to the June squad.
A win over the Czechs would secure Scotland’s place in another two-legged play-off against either Sweden or Lithuania, with a spot at next summer’s tournament in Brazil on the line.
Finally! It has been over a year since these two were last called up. The squad needs that leadership desperately.
