Saudi-Backed Yemen Government Launches Offensive to Retake Houthi Territories

Yemen’s Saudi-backed government has officially declared the commencement of a new military operation aimed at recapturing all territory currently under Houthi control. This strategic move comes amid escalating hostilities, with reports indicating that the Iranian-backed militant group has achieved fresh ground gains, reportedly surrounding a government-held city.

Rashad al-Alimi, who leads Yemen’s presidential council, announced the offensive on Sunday. In a formal statement, al-Alimi declared the initiation of operations to restore republican authority across the nation’s remaining occupied areas.

“I announce today the start of military operations to retake the remaining territories of the republic and extend the authority of the state and its institutions across the entire national territory,” al-Alimi said.

The announcement followed intelligence reports that Houthi forces severed a critical supply route leading to the besieged city of Taiz, heightening concerns over the humanitarian situation and the government’s defensive capabilities in the region.

5 responses to “Saudi-Backed Yemen Government Launches Offensive to Retake Houthi Territories”

  1. Interesting timing on this announcement right after the supply route reports. Looks like a strategic response rather than pure initiative.

  2. Wait, didn’t this same government promise stability last year? It feels like the same cycles repeating with higher death tolls each time.

  3. I’m skeptical this offensive changes the balance of power. The Houthis are well-entrenched and unlikely to yield these gains easily.

  4. The Taiz siege is the real crisis here. Retaking land sounds good, but cutting off supplies could be catastrophic for innocent people.

  5. Another escalation in this endless conflict is deeply troubling. How many more civilians need to suffer before diplomacy takes precedence?
