The conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen has escalated further, resulting in at least five deaths. The violence underscores a deteriorating security situation as both sides exchange accusations and military strikes.
Saudi authorities accused the Houthis of launching a “cowardly” attack on Mecca, Islam’s holiest city and a central destination for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. The rebel group has firmly denied allegations that they targeted the city.
In the southwestern Yemeni city of Taiz, the Houthis claimed that Saudi warplanes struck three telecommunications towers. Meanwhile, Houthi-aligned Almisrah TV reported that one civilian was killed in the northwest town of Abs. The channel subsequently stated that the internationally recognized Yemeni government carried out strikes that killed three children.
On the Saudi side, the civil defense agency confirmed that one individual died after being hit by shrapnel from a downed drone in the Mecca area. Additionally, explosions damaged nearby buildings and vehicles. This marks the first confirmed casualty within Saudi Arabia during the current spike in hostilities.
The breakdown of the 2022 truce occurred in July after the Houthis permitted an Iranian aircraft to land in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, directly challenging Saudi enforcement of Yemeni airspace restrictions. In retaliation, the Houthis declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia.
Since the onset of Yemen’s civil war in 2014, the Houthis have maintained control over Sanaa and densely populated western regions. They have reported dozens of Saudi air strikes since their recent offensive aimed at securing coastal areas near the Red Sea’s Bab al-Mandab Strait. Control of this strait has grown increasingly critical globally, particularly after Iran imposed restrictions on the nearby Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions with the US and Israel.
According to United Nations figures, the ongoing conflict has displaced more than 100,000 people.
