Saint-Maximin speaks out after children targeted in racist abuse

Allan Saint-Maximin has broken his silence regarding the racist abuse directed at his children, stating that it was crucial to raise awareness rather than remain silent. The French winger, currently with Charlotte FC, revealed that his kids were targeted this year, an incident he addressed firmly on Instagram in January to condemn hatred and discrimination.

Although the four-time father has kept specific details private, he confirmed the abuse occurred while he was playing for Mexican side Club America. “I explained to the kids what happened was not normal and they knew already,” Saint-Maximin said. “They were not really happy about that. I was a bit sad about my son, but in every place there are these type of things, even in France.”

Saint-Maximin emphasized that his decision to speak out was driven by a desire to set an example for his family and others. “Whatever your colour is, you don’t have to accept this,” he told BBC Sport. “It was important to show to people, especially in my situation, that I can lose a lot of things, but I will never accept this.”

Club America issued a statement expressing solidarity with the player and his family, and teammates displayed a ‘No to racism’ banner prior to a match against Necaxa. Saint-Maximin was quick to clarify that his criticism was not aimed at the club or the country, noting, “It was not the fault of Club America… I love the club. It was one of the best places I’ve been with my family.” He added that the abuse came from “some random people” outside the institution.

Following his stint in Mexico, Saint-Maximin returned to France to play for Lens, where he helped the club win their first-ever French Cup and finish second in Ligue 1. This summer, he made a move to Major League Soccer side Charlotte, citing family considerations as the primary factor. “My family have always followed me to every single place,” he explained. “So this time was more of a family choice. It was a way for me to give back what they have given to me since I started my career.”

At Charlotte, Saint-Maximin works under manager Dean Smith and aims to create a legacy while entertaining fans. Reflecting on his career, he highlighted his four-year tenure at Newcastle United, where he developed a deep bond with supporters. He volunteered at local food banks and gifted items to fans, driven by their unwavering support.

“If I was able to give all of my money to them, I would because there is nothing better than the feeling they give you,” he said. “The love they give to you, when I ran with the ball, I had the feeling of people behind me and I ran because of them.”

Saint-Maximin remains loyal to Newcastle, describing it as his “dream club.” Despite opportunities to return to the Premier League, he stayed away until his recent departure, and he wishes current head coach Matthias Jaissle and his staff success at St James’ Park.
