Dafroza Gauthier, a woman known for dedicating nearly 30 years to locating and pursuing Rwandan genocide suspects living in France, has passed away at the age of 72. Her husband, Alain Gauthier, announced her death on Sunday following her passing in Reims on Saturday.
Gauthier worked alongside her husband to track down individuals suspected of participating in the 1994 slaughter of more than 800,000 Tutsi people. Many of those accused had sought refuge in France, where the couple spent decades attempting to bring them to justice.
The Franco-Rwandan couple became widely recognized for their relentless efforts to ensure that perpetrators of the genocide faced legal consequences, even after finding sanctuary abroad. Their work drew international attention, including features by France 24, which highlighted their mission to hold suspects accountable.
Does anyone know if any convictions actually resulted from their hunt? I’d love to see the final tally.
I had no idea their efforts were so extensive. It’s sobering to think how many got away with it in France.
Incredible dedication. Thirty years of hunting those who hid in plain sight says everything about her character.
